On December 14th, the North Clackamas FFA held the annual Greenhand Night to recognize all of our new Greenhand members. On this night, we had over fifty members, guests and parents attend this version of our December meeting.
Early in the evening, we listened to nine first year members recite the FFA Creed. The creed is a 5 paragraph speech that expresses every FFA member’s passion for agriculture and hard work as well as the understanding of the hardships and discomforts that many agriculturalists have to face year to year. After listening to these amazing speakers, the judges had to decide which three members would be moving on to the Mt. Hood District speaking contest in January. After much discussion, it was decided that Sawyer Bruck, Reggie Varesio and Gabby Brant would continue to represent the North Clackamas FFA.
Our 2010-2011 Jr. Officer team then had the amazing opportunity to run their first meeting and get a taste of what it is like to take charge of the chapter, and lead the numerous members. The team covered old business, new business, and upcoming events and also had the rare opportunity to reward over thirty Greenhand members with their degree. Every member that applied for Greenhand degree must be enrolled in an agricultural education class, have learned and explain the FFA creed, FFA motto, and FFA mission, understand and describe the FFA emblem and history of the FFA organization, as well as understand the FFA code of ethics and proper use of the FFA jacket.
Soon after the Greenhand Degree Ceremony, the Jr. Officers had the opportunity to install the six new Jr. Officers, and retire from their place in office. The new 2011-2012 Jr. Officer Team followed:
President- Kendra Sedgwick
Vice-President- Gabby Brant
Secretary- Samantha Bailey
Treasurer- Jacob Linn
Reporter- Danielle Hill
Sentinel- Sawyer Bruck
All of the first year members who attended this meeting, and got their degree have just taken the first step toward being yet another successful FFA member. With an amazing number of members receiving their degrees, and such a strong new Jr. Officer Team, the North Clackamas FFA is excited for the promising New Year!
